Men's Rugby

mens rugby.jpeg   The St George’s Rugby Club is a vibrant and well-organised team and we have a strong tradition of playing a high level of rugby. On a Wednesday we play in the BUCS league and on a Saturday in the Surrey League. We also compete in a number of competitions over the course of the season, most famously - the United Hospitals Challenge Cup, the National Association of Medical Schools (NAMS) Cup and the University of London’s Gutteridge Cup (which we won in 2003).

In addition, there are usually several seven-a-side competitions, and this year we are looking forward to making our second appearance at the New York 7’s.

For the more talented, there is the opportunity to be selected to play for the United Hospitals’ team. The UH captain is an Imperial boy this year, and there are usually games against very decent sides such as Oxford and Cambridge twos, and premiership under-21 sides.

We had a solid season last year, ending 3rd in our BUSA league (now BUCS) after a narrow loss in our promotion battle against Imperial, whilst our Saturday team got promoted. This has given us a very solid foundation for the coming season and we are looking to carry forward last year's momentum; so we really hit the ground running in September.

We also enjoy the social aspect of rugby and the 2 teams get together back at the SU bar in the evenings after matches to unwind and celebrate (hopefully!). The rugby dinner is one of the most anticipated nights of the year, where we get into our DJs and head into central for a fine meal and annual awards ceremony. We have a social tour once a season – the greatest weekend of the year - where we head off to a different city and spend a long weekend welcoming the freshers into the club as well as enjoying team activities.

This year we have Ollie de Brett and Chris Orton captaining the 1st and 2nd teams respectively. Please feel free to approach them or check out our new website to find out more about the club:

Ladies Rugby

Yes, that’s right, we are ladies! And we play rugby!

SGUL Ladies Rugby team is made up of a real mix of individuals who are looking to have a good time, to get fit and to learn more about the beautiful game. There is no requirement of you other than to be enthusiastic. If you are a total novice or a bit of a pro(fessional) we will welcome you!
Rugby is a true team sport which isn’t anywhere near as scary as it looks. With a wide variety of roles in the game, there is a position for everyone, and of course, with all this team work, a certain amount of team bonding is required off the pitch! So if you can down a pint in 4 seconds, or if you like to sip a glass of iced water with a slice of lemon (for which you may be fined…) but like to have fun, come and join us!
