Students' Union's Charity Registration

Up to now we have existed as an exempt charity derived from our parent institution under the exempt Charities Order 1962. After the Charities Act 2003 this ability to ‘hide’ within our institution was removed. Therefore we have to register on our own with the Charity Commission. The next steps are to review our governance and create a trustee board with the aim of registering with the commission in the spring. The process we are about to go thorugh is outlined in the diagram below.                                                         trac 10

Students' Union Activities Review

Over the next few months the Students’ Union is having to register as a Charity with the Charity Commission. This is a massive undertaking which involves a review of all our activities including our clubs and societies. As a charity we will have to make sure we are compliant both with our charitable objectives and charity law. So from this we want to make sure we are fully aware of the extent of our activities and that we are supporting them as much as possible.

Sadly, this will have to take the form of a longish questionnaire, but its honest completion is essential. Some answers may seem obvious but we want to make sure we have all the information for all clubs/societies. The questionnaire and its requirements are compulsory for all clubs and societies and failure to complete may result in operational and/or financial sanctions. All of this is outlined within the general policy for Clubs and Societies.

The questionnaires will be reviewed by a working group of the Exec and any issues raised will be discussed and further meetings arranged if felt necessary. If you have any questions do not hesitate to get in contact with the Students' Union.

We would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this.
