Student's Union Executive Committee

dragon.jpeg
St George's Students' Union at St. George’s, University of London - is the legally recognised body of all students who study here. It represents students on all matters, with academic, social and welfare responsibilities. There is no charge for students to join, and the services offered by the Students’ Union include the School Shop, the Bookshop, the Bar, clubs and societies and the Robert Lowe Sports Centre.

SGSU is managed by the student Exec which is made up of elected officers and council representatives. The Exec manages the running of all student activities, funds and manages the clubs and societies accounts. It meets fortnightly during term and all students are welcome to attend meetings.

SGSU is affiliated to NUS (National Union of Students) and ULU (University of London Union). The resources offered to us by the NUS include a vast wealth of information to legal advice, and discounts on services and in high street stores. ULU are able to offer additional clubs and societies that may not be offered here at St George's, and allows the more competitive students to play at higher levels.

Hello there! This year I am your President, so my main role will be managing the Students’ Union and making sure everything is running smoothly. I’ll be meeting with the top dogs of our University and voicing student opinion and views, as well as helping out our own clubs, societies and SU events. On top of all this, I’ll be representing George’s, even at the external events like NUS, ULU and Medgroup.

Even though I’m locked up in my office and going to lots of meetings, I’m still a student only taking a year out, so don’t be afraid to come pay a visit if you have anything on your mind. I’m sure I can point you in the right direction with all the people I know. Remember, I’m on your side and I’ll be working hard for you, the Student!
Hi there! My main job on the SU Exec is to look after your general wellbeing, so if you have any problems at all please come and see me and I'll do whatever I can to sort them out; whether they are with exams, with a lecturer or just generally want to chat.  You'll find me in the Exec office, where my door is always open; as are the Counsellors' doors, who are just round the corner and are there to listen when you need it most.  Both myself and the Counsellors work with a policy to be completely confidential, so you can be assured that anything you tell us will go no further.  I also sit on various Educational Committees where it is my job to make your voices heard by the staff who set the structure of your course and look after all your educational needs.  Oh yes... and you can get free condoms and free chlamydia self-screening kit from me too - completely discretely of course.

Hi! My specific role is basically to look after all the Students' Unions' money!  We have a number of businesses here that I am sure you know very well; such as the school shop, Eddie Wilson's CafĂ©, the book shop (the only one in Tooting!) and of course our magnificent bar. Apart from the boring stuff like tax and invoices, I also help the clubs, societies and the Union as a whole run as effectively as possible. If you ever have a question, need to claim some money back, book a minibus, or buy something like a Ball ticket, come see either myself or our wonderful assistant Agnella in the office and we will be more than happy to help you.

Hello there, my name's Charlie and I am your General Secretary for this academic year. This means I organise all the meetings of the Union (Exec, Council and AGM - to which all are welcome), and along with the Chair ensure that both the Union and the Exec run smoothly, and play by the rules. Additionally, I work with the Sports Officers and the Societies Officers to ensure that all clubs and societies are recognised by the Union.  I'm a Senior Officer, along with David, Jonny and whomever takes on the role of VP welfare except I'm not a sabbatical, so I am still studying and don't get paid! But, I am always available should you have any queries or want anything put on the agenda for exec meetings.

Akin Onigbinde & Hamza Alao
Community Projects Officer
stuuni-cpo@sgul.ac.uk
Hey dudes and dudettes,

We’re  Akin Onigbinde and Hamza Alao, and we have the awesome of job of being your community project officers for 2009/2010. So what does that actually mean? Well we believe the title simply means the effective and skillful officiating of the Students’ Union’s community projects or in lay terms, promoting and helping the volunteering groups at our lovely George’s in the most fun way possible.

We want you to volunteer here so if you want to get involved, please come and we will point you in the right direction of what you think is suited for you. Equally if you have your own ideas of volunteering opportunities for our students, come forward and grab either of us and we’ll show you how (evil laugh goes here).

The important thing is to get involved and we can help you do as much or as little as you want so feel free to grab a hold of either of us for a chat. We’re uber friendly, nice, fun, and approachable, well Hamza is anyway. If you want Akin, send an email.
Hello there, my name’s Ray and I am acting as your Union Chair for this academic year. This means I run all the meetings of the Union, and make sure that the Union plays by the rules and everything is above board. Also, I act as ‘The Oracle’ regarding SGSU’s Constitution and Policies (The Playbook- pick up a copy from the SU Office, or get it from the SU website- it’s a great read, honest!). In all seriousness, I’m here to answer questions for both the Exec and students alike, so please don’t hesitate to say hello if you see me around!  You’ll also catch me on the field as captain of the Men’s Hockey 2nd XI, and on the stage in the Revue and Musical.

Hi Everyone! We're your Bar Officers who have the job of arranging all your AWESOME events for the following year.  Disco may sound like a strange perhaps “uncool” word to some people, but here at George's - you know you love it!  Be prepared for great themes this year such as Superheroes and Villains, Under the Sea, and all the classics including Halloween and the infamous Christmas disco!  We would really like you to give us feedback and your ideas on upcoming events so we can give the people what they really want. If you have not found the group already there is a group on Facebook (the greatest invention in the history of mankind) called St George's Bar 08 where you can voice your opinions and ideas!  See you in the bar!

Hello everyone. We are your charities officers for the next year. Our job is to raise as much as possible for charities throughout the year, working with societies and campus charities to help them raise as much as they can.

We need YOU to get involved in RAG. RAG will be around the end of February with even more incredible events than freshers; such as the crazy man-o-man, the legendary RAG ball and the best event in the whole year, the Pram Race. It is sure to be the most amazing few weeks of your year, so make sure YOU get involved.

The most important way we raise money in RAG is mashing. Mashing involves going out on the tube with buckets, dressed in scrubs, nurses outfits and anything else silly that you can get your hands on. This is where we require ALL OF YOUR help!
So come February, take a little trip to the RAG office, borrow some scrubs and help us raise more than ever before. And in the meantime make sure you experience that legendary George’s spirit – COR BLIMEY!

Hey guys!

As you know (if not will soon find out) there is always a myriad of meetings, social events, classes occurring within the student body at George’s – you’ll most likely be a part of one.

? How will you know the ‘When, Where and How’?
? How will you raise awareness of your particular event or point of view?
! Answer: Your Communication and Campaigns officer

I’m here to facilitate all round communication between you, your societies and the SU.

Keep an eye out for the weekly emailed newsletter which should keep you posted on the entire goings on. Feel free to email me about any events/meetings that you would like to raise awareness of via the Newsletter, LCD Widescreens etc
Hello Everyone! Our job is to oversee your entertainment for this year. That means controlling when and where you are entertained. So, no fun whatsoever unless we tell you to.  We're joking of course, and we want you to have as much fun as possible while you're here.
If any of you have any ideas for the music at the discos, the running of rehearsals and shows for the performing societies, then let us know. Of course, if there are any budding DJs out there, tell us and we'll try and slot you in to play at one of the discos.
So we hope you party-animals are prepared for this year, as the bar officers and us will be working hard for your enjoyment.

Marissa Wilson & Johanna Andersson
Heritage & Estates Officers
hande@sgul.ac.uk
Hello! We are Joie and Marissa, your Heritage and Estates officers for 2009/10. We are here to maintain George’s traditions and uphold its image and identity. Next year we want to:
•    Create a Graffiti wall for everyone to make their mark on.
•    Increase the singing frequency of the George’s song.
•    Create a “Recent Events and Achievements” wall.
•    Continue the work of our predecessors.
Feel free to come and find us and let us know about what you want done in your university. We want everyone to feel part of the uni, and we think it’s important that we get things done that will benefit everyone!  So tell us your ideas! Likewise, if you have any queries or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask.
Hi Everyone! The societies at St George's represent the vibrant and inclusive nature of the Students' Union. Societies add a huge amount to your experience of university life. This is where we, the Societies Officers, come into action.
Our aim is to represent you and the societies at St George's.
With around 60 different societies there is hopefully something to tempt everyone in the student's union. Of course, if you can't find a society to fulfil your needs, we can help and support you to create one.
Societies are a fantastic way to meet new people, learn new skills and have a lot of fun. If you have any questions about the clubs and societies at George's or any other aspect of university life, please don't hesitate to ask us. Drop us an email at susociet@sgul.ac.uk or pop up to the Students' Union office.

 Your Year Representatives

If you have any problems with your course, your first point of contact should be with your Year Rep.  They will be happy to help with any problems or concerns you have. If they are unable to deal with your issue, they will point you in the direction of someone who can help.
Where there is no Year Rep listed, there is no-one currently in that position.  If you have any concerns, please contact Dave Hobden (VP: Education & Welfare); contact details are above.
